Fuel-pump logs from the county highway department, obtained by the Pioneer through a records request, show two gaps this spring — one of six days in late March, another of eight days in mid-May — during which no dispensing records were kept at the Whitehall shop.
The department has attributed both lapses to an outage in the card reader that controls the pumps, and has said fuel use during those periods was reconstructed from vehicle odometer readings.
The outside audit that flagged 61 missing credit-card receipts, recommends automatic electronic logging with a paper backup so that a hardware failure does not leave the record blank. The finance committee meets July 21.
